- Project status Completed
The Bandicoot Superhighway Project aims to reduce extinction risk for the Endangered southern brown bandicoot in South Australia’s Mount Lofty Ranges.
Southern brown bandicoots play a vital ecological role, turning over about four tonnes of soil annually, aiding nutrient cycling, spreading mycorrhizal fungi, and creating conditions for native plant germination.
A partnership between Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu and Sturt Upper Reaches Landcare Group (SURLG) secured $250,000 over two years from the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife, which also supported the project plan.
The long-term goal is an ecologically functional “Superhighway” of habitat. This included maintaining and connecting habitat alongside other recovery actions to boost success.
Work undertaken included:
- Expanding habitat via community and corporate planting;
- Increasing survey and monitoring through education;
- Using ecological burns to improve habitat;
- Weed control and fencing to protect vegetation;
- Trialling translocations to expand the species’ range.
