Tools and tech: Kangaroo guards

WMML21641

At sustainable numbers, kangaroos play their part in the local ecosystem, but when populations build up - especially in dry times - they can hit revegetation hard.

Heavy grazing and bark damage can stop seedlings from ever getting away. Kangaroo guards are a simple, effective fix, protecting young trees while they establish. Most guards are around 1200 mm high and work best when firmly anchored with multiple stakes. Check guards regularly, particularly after strong winds or periods of high activity. Remove or adjust guards once the tree is tall enough for its top leaves to be above browsing height, usually after 2–5 years.
