A reminder for deer owners

The identification and containment of farmed deer play an important role in distinguishing domestic animals from feral deer and supporting effective deer management across the region.

All farmed deer over 12 months of age must carry a visible permanent ear tag linked to the owner's Property Identification Code (PIC). Deer being transported from a property must also be tagged, regardless of age.

Feral deer are an increasing concern across the Hills and Fleurieu, where they can damage native vegetation, impact agricultural production and create risks for road users. Appropriate identification and containment of farmed deer helps reduce these risks and assists authorities to trace the origin of animals if they escape into the environment. Most deer owners understand and meet their responsibilities, however there are real consequences for non-compliance, with potential fines reaching several thousand dollars.

Now is a good time to check ear-tagging, as most deer have dropped their antlers, and walk your fences to check for gaps and fallen branches.

If you're unsure about your responsibilities regarding ear-tagging, deer identification, fencing requirements or deer management, we're here to help.
