Preparing your reveg site
Now is an ideal time to start preparing for revegetation. Good site preparation in autumn gives seedlings the best chance of success.
Focus on strong weed control well before planting to reduce competition for moisture and nutrients. Localised deep ripping of compacted soils in some degraded sites may also be needed before the site gets too wet.
It’s also a good time to contact your local nursery to confirm your seedling order and delivery timing so everything is ready for planting season. Check out our Five Steps to Thriving Revegetation guide.
Perfect timing for tackling weeds
Recent rain combined with the start of autumn creates the ideal timing for tackling many woody weeds.
After a dry summer, recent rain will trigger active growth in weeds such as blackberry. See our Five Ways to Effective Weed Control guide.
For information about appropriate herbicides and their application, consult the Weed Control Handbook for Declared Plants in South Australia.
Time to take on hawthorn
Autumn is the perfect time to control deciduous trees such as hawthorn and willows.
When applied correctly, before leaf drop, the trees actively move the herbicide to their root system as they draw drown elements from their leaves.
If controlling deciduous trees along a watercourse, you can consult our Recommended Best Practice Guidelines for Vegetation Removal.
Be aware that a Water Affecting Activity (WAA) Permit will be needed for trees over 1.5 m high. See our WAA webpage for more information.
